It's something to do with which way you have the map in the bottom left hand corner set
When the map is changed to an icon, instead of merely minimized, the orientation display appears to replace it, as it is otherwise shown on the miniaturized map.
I noticed the other day ( now realizing possibly why) that my orientation icon was gone, and I was also playing with the live view and map views. So that explains where it went. I have to check today ( if it stops raining). If you have the map in the corner but 1 size larger then basically thumbnail, does the orientation icon then appear on that small map in the bottom left corner?
The orientation icon is only visible when the map is just an icon itself. If you open the small map, the orientation disappears. Appalling piece of design from DJI, especially considering they keep saying to point the antennae towards the drone at all times, so you would think the orientation is quite important

Mine has been very intermittent while using my iPhone X or my iPad Pro (cell+wifi) with longer USBC to Lighting. I'm pretty new with the MA2 so assumed it was a bug. Mine is often flat out wrong when its functioning the other half the time I have the red symbol displayed (but different than yours). I never change the map view so now I'm wondering; IS THIS A MA2 BUG OR, AN ISSUE JUST WITH MY SETUP?

After all of the "research" I have done to get mine to work on my LGV30 (which I use as a music player because of the DAC and just to fly my drone) I guess the PHONE compass needs to calibrate as well. If yours doesn't work try installing google maps on your android, and make sure it's granted GPS and whatever permissions it needs. That did the trick for me
The map was working properly, so phone GPS, drone GPS and drone compass were working. Must have been some android update that let the DJI FLY read the Samsung's compass. The compass app and 2 navigators have always worked on this phone.

The miniaturized map view also shows the orientation, if you unlock the North compass orientation to that of the direction the RC is facing. When the line back to the RC from the aircraft is vertical, you are directly facing the drone.
Only caveat is the compass in the device must be properly calibrated, same as for the white orientation indicator in the middle when the map is only an icon. The Hall Effect will sometimes throw off the compass calibration during flight. Doing multiple figure eights with the tablet and RC facing the drone will usually restore the wayward compass calibration without losing signal.
