Must I always go to manual and use the "double the shutter" speed vs the filter I am using or can I leave it on auto so it self adjusts? On manual, I found I was too bright then too dark (I was flying different aspects from the sun).

Thanks in advance.

Sure. Auto Exposure will do nicely. You just try to pick a filter so the shutter speed is about twice the frame rate.

While Auto will ensure exposure adjustment to reflect changing lighting conditions, it will also change the shutter speed, which is the OP's concern. Bottom line, is that you can't have both when shooting under varying lighting conditions. However, the changing exposure will be more distracting than a bit of jitter when the shutter speed gets too fast. Use Auto and pick the best ND for the direction and composition (sky and landscape ratio) you are intending to shoot. Fly higher from the ground and don't pan much, to minimize movement across the frame.
