Puebla de Sanabria, in the province of Zamora, in Castilla y León, is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, is a historical treasure located in a unique natural environment, on the banks of the rivers Tera and Castro. Strolling through its cobbled streets is like stepping back to the Middle Ages, thanks to the architecture of its houses, streets, its excellent preservation of walls, castles and churches. In addition to its heritage, the place offers nature in its purest state and a rich gastronomy, with dishes such as beans and trout Sanabresa, cabbage broth or veal Sanabresa.

Its strategic location in a high bend between rivers made it a defensive bastion over the centuries. Puebla de Sanabria was first mentioned in documents from the 6th century and, since then, it has been the scene of numerous battles. In the 15th century, the IV Count of Benavente, Rodrigo Alonso Pimentel, ordered the construction of the imposing castle that today dominates the town, crowned by the Torre del Homenaje or, as the locals call it, “El Macho”. Although the castle was damaged during the wars with Portugal and other conflicts, it was restored in the 20th century and today houses exhibitions and the municipal library.

In addition to the castle, Puebla de Sanabria has the Church of Nuestra Señora del Azogue, built in the 12th century and enlarged in later centuries. With its Romanesque and Gothic details, it stands out for its baptismal font and its 18th century organ.

The town, recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site, also offers proximity to the Natural Park of Lake Sanabria, home to the largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula. This place is a haven for native fauna and flora and offers an idyllic setting to enjoy nature.

Puebla de Sanabria is not only a place steeped in history, but also a strategic trading enclave over the centuries. Its connection with Galicia and Portugal facilitated the transit of goods and made the town a key point for trade routes. Today, it is still a destination of great tourist relevance, where you can enjoy both its historical heritage, tranquility, gastronomy and its natural environment.
