During Rusia-Turkey war in Bulgaria, there were several big fights for mountain crossings - Shipka was very uneven number wise and Botev (great Bulgarian Poet and revolutioner) wrote a poem for it. Later on, when Bulgaria was free they build this monument and it's very popular ever since.
