SmartCapture without first activating app or controller?

It looks like you have to first go to the smartcapture mode in the app before you can use the Air in that mode. Too bad, because one of the things that keeps me from using the MP more is the fiddling with the app and remote before you get airborne. Even if you already have the phone attached it's at least 20-30 seconds before flying, and then if you don't want the controller in your shot that's another 10 seconds. I would love to be able to turn on the Air without app or controller on, and have that be the signal to it that, okay, we're in smartcaptire mode now. That capability, along with the APAS and back sensors, would make it the perfect hiking drone for me. When actively hiking, you could respond in a few seconds to things you see, and then at rest breaks or lunch you could take out the controller and app for the longer distance shots, other flight modes, etc.
