Steering Using Spotlight

i understand Spotlight mode identifies a focal point or object and keeps it in the photo frame as the drone flys around.
What I don't understand is the explanation of how the contoller sticks act as the drone reorients itself. I read they correspond to the drone's original position not it's curent position:

Can someone explain or diagram this? I feel pretty dense.

I'm trying Spotlight for the first time and finding when I fly towards and then over my target, my M3P stops when overhead and won't automatically turn around and fly backwards to continue the flypast sequence. I then had to land so couldn't test further but must I use the yaw stick to rotate the drone as it passes overhead - or is it just not possible to continue a spotlight sequence if flying directly over the target? (I see in the video above at 3:25 that the M3P flies around and behind a villa but at some distance away, ie as though orbiting.)
