Taiping is a town in northwest Malaysia. It's known for its well preserved colonial architecture. Taiping Lake Gardens, a public park with Angsana trees and a lotus pond, was established in 1880 on the site of an old tin mine. The gardens were created in 1884 on a 60+ hectare site of abandoned tin mines on land donated by wealthy tin miner and rubber planter, Chung Keng Quee. Under the direction of town planner Charles Compton Reade the lakes were landscaped and the gardens were planted with grass, flowers and trees. With the hills of Bukit Larut in the background there are few places in Malaysia which can match the splendor of the Lake Gardens. Taiping also receives some limelight for being the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia. The average annual rainfall is about 4,000mm in Taiping while the peninsula's average is 2,000mm – 2,500mm.
