We love sailing to remote places and this week we visit one of the least visited places in Indonesia. The Aru Islands lie just off the west coast of Papua, in a forgotten corner of the country. A few years ago I read a book called "The Malay Archipelago" by Alfred Wallace. He spent many years during the 1800's exploring remote places in this part of the of the world and discovered many many new species of animal. He spent a good deal of time in the Aru Islands and it fascinated me and I'd always wished to visit. Well, now was our chance! With terrible charts, fuzzy satellite images and almost no info online we set off on a real adventure, sailing far inland up narrow channels to a remote village where the real adventure was to begin.
Enjoy this one guys.
