➤ Monument to Gagarin was erected in 1980 for the Olympics-80 on Gagarin square on Leninsky Prospekt. The authors of the monument are sculptor P. I. Bondarenko, architects-Ya. b. Belopolsky, F. M. Gajewski, designer A. F. Sadako. High ribbed pedestal of a statue of Yuri Gagarin, made of titanium. The height of the monument — 42.5 m, total weight — 12 tons. At the foot of the monument is a copy of the lander of the spaceship "Vostok", which the 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin made the first flight into space.
Place for the monument was not chosen by chance — it is on Leninsky Prospekt, the Yuri Gagarin entered the city from Vnukovo airport to make a report to the Central Committee about the results of the first flight into space. Gagarin square is one of the largest in Moscow. According to the architects, the monument should be visible from the ring road.
