Over Water Ops

Threats : Wind / Battery Life / Sensors / Magnetic Interference / Birds / Visual Line of Sight / Remote Landings / Sand / and Take off Points !

Wind and Battery Life = Close calls our abundant , remote landing mean disaster. Knowing your battery is key.

Sensors - our a pain just turn them off.

Take Off Points - Wind can make it difficult to hand launch so find Grass , stay away from everything else

Magnetic Interference - Means you choose a bad take off point and you drone is compromised and the adventure begins.

Birds - Loose visual line of sight and your drone is a french fry for those birds. Watch the Birds !

Remote Landings - Wind and Battery did not add up and your drone will Land in the water.

Sand - Taking off from the Beach in the Wind - No

Take Off Points - Key to being a well seasoned Pilot.

Wind - Learn to fly in 15 mph winds , Learn to escort your drone with the Wind , and know the limits of your drone.

Respectfully, if I may add one thing. Do not absolutely attempt to take off from a moving boat. Winds can play havoc with take off and especially landing.

Learned my lesson hard!

This can be done consistently and safely with care:

i prefer to fly over open water than over land. As many have said, it greatly diminishes the need to be concerned with collisions. It also is the absolute best case scenario for the maximum GPS lock, due to the completely open view of the sky. I do make a point, however, of keeping a very close eye on my altitude if I am flying lower than, say, 10m above the surface. I know that there is very frequently a slow drift downward as I get closer to the water surface.

One of my favorite types of video shots is flying very close to the surface near a water’s edge to capture waves breaking on the shoreline. I routinely fly .5m above the surface, panning sideways. I only do this when I have a very clear direct view of my drone so I can watch its clearance above the surface however.

I also agree that, generally speaking, wind is quite a bit stronger over open water than on land. This has never proven a problem either so long as I know ahead of time what to expect and make an informed decision as to whether to fly into it or not.

To be honest, I haven't been keeping score but it just SEEMS to me that a lot of forum members loose their equipment in water. Maybe I'm all wet when it comes to this subject. The reason I started this thread is that I am a new Drone Pilot and I hope learn from others because I have seen some great shots that were taken over water and I myself would like to take some like that in the future.
Effects - as long as you watch your altitude and you have a great GPS signal you will be ok! I have logged over 100 miles total and out of those I would say more then half have been logged over water and I have yet to have one drop from the sky into the ocean. You just need to pay very close attention to your signal even know it will give you warnings in your DJI GO 4 app. I do most of my flying over the Gulf Of Mexico so I have another set of eye watching for any helicopters or Cenass airplanes flying with banners over the beaches! Some of the helicopters and Cenass are flying under 300 ft so that's why I always have a spotter when doing any flying over the water in the Tampabay area! Its always good to have another set of eyes when flying ???!! Safe Flying mate and all of the best from FL,
