The Part 107 License Exam is FREE for some folks. Do you qualify?

I originally posted about this almost two years ago. At that time, the Pandemic was causing many cancellations and closures and this program offered through the Federal Aviation Administration for the US Department of Transportation was affected as well.

Certain groups of people, depending on their affiliation with various organizations, may not have to pay the $175.00 fee to take the Part 107 License Test… Additionally there are almost a hundred more exams also being offered Free.

These groups include members of the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA), the Joint Services Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC), the U.S. Military, the DOD, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS))…

And included within these groups are: Active-Duty Military, Guard, and Reserve component personnel of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Navy; U.S. Military retirees; U.S. Military dependents; Department of Defense (DOD) civilians; Department of Homeland Security (DHS) civilians; and many others who have unescorted access onto a Military Installation.

The authority for this is listed below…

U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, National Policy, Subj: Conduct of Airman Knowledge Tests, Order 8080.6H, Dated 22 Sept 2017.

I am a Retired Veteran of the US Armed Forces so my experience is with the education benefits offered at military installations and this supported my research; therefore, it deals primarily with those who are associated with the U.S. Military and those who have unescorted access onto a Military Installation.

If you are not within this group, those associated with the US Military and you are employed within one of the other above mentioned groups, you should contact your human resource department concerning your education benefits and your access to these free tests.

First off, No matter which group you are associated with, the following link lists all the Exams you may be eligible to take at No Cost (FREE…).

FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix -- May 18, 2021…

The Part 107 License Exam (Test Code - UAG -- Unmanned Aircraft General - Small) is listed on Page 15, after nearly a hundred other exams you can take for Free…

In so many words, you will navigate to the PSI True Talent Scheduling System and you will then be sent to the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) Website to register with the FAA to be issued an FAA Tracking Number (FTN) that the FAA will associate with you from now on (If you do not already have an FTN). After you get the FTN, you will navigate back to the PSI True Talent Scheduling System and register and verify your eligibility with them. Then you will be given the opportunity to schedule a test. You will want to know the closest military installations so you can input the required distance, otherwise the scheduling system will only find the available test locations near you and you will pay the $175 fee… My original Home Town was Albany, New York, and out of curiosity, I had to input 200-miles to find the closest Free Military Testing Facility and it was New Haven, Connecticut, 150-miles away… So, to save $175, you may have to do some driving; but $175 will buy a lot of Gas…

Here is a Web Site to find a Testing Site near you…

List of FAA Drone Testing Centers

Then you will need to navigate to the PSI True Talent Scheduling System to verify your eligibility and Scheduling System to schedule your Exam.

As you scroll down the page and read the instructions, you will be directed to go to the "Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) Website" to be issued a FAA Tracking Number (FTN).

Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) Web Page…

IACRA is an FAA web site that allows people to apply for new Airman Certificates, or to upgrade their existing certificates. The entire application process takes place on the website, including electronic signing of applications, and at the end of the process all the necessary documents will be sent electronically to the Airman Registry.

After you have completed your registration with the FAA and have been issued your FTN (looks like C-1234567), you will be directed back to the PSI True Talent Scheduling System and with your FTN, you will now have to register with them.

Once you have completed the registration process, you will be able to schedule an Exam. If you want a Free Exam, you must take it at a Military Installation and if any Exam Dates are available, you may then choose a date and time. The Scheduler will also list all other exams available within the Time Frame and Distance you specified. However, if these Exam Sites are not on a Military Installation, they are a Commercial Test Facility and you will have to pay the $175 Fee.

As you can see in the example of an Exam for me, the FREE Exam is clearly marked. If there is no reference to it being Free, it isn't… I have often written that I live in the Class D Airspace of Lalngley AFB and you might notice that the distance to the testing facility is less that 5-miles

NO Charge for Exam.jpg

You will then Click the SCHEDULE Button and the rest is up to you.

To ensure the exam is free, you may have to Google the phone number, (for example "Fort Podunk or Zoomie Air Force Base Education Center"…). Additionally, if no dates come up on the scheduler at the Military Installation, you might have to call and ask if they are offering testing. They might only offer the exam testing on specific dates and you might have to be flexible on your preferred date of testing… As my Grandmother would say, "Beggars can't be choosers…"

Again, not all military installations offer this type of testing as the requirements are stringent.

Fort Eustis, Virginia, home of the Army Transportation School and the Army Aviation Logistics School (only 7-miles from me…) stopped their testing when the pandemic hit and they have no intention to re-start. And it is the Home of their Helicopter School and the personnel stationed there cannot get advanced aviation certificates, figure that one…

Back on point, a member asked about Disabled Veterans. I am not the "Gate Guard" I can only guess from what I have read over the years as to whether you would be granted access to the Military Installation.

If you are a Veteran with a Service Connected Disability and you were medically retired, you might still qualify…

The DoD recently announced the rules for how newly eligible veterans and caregivers (spouses, significant others, etc…) will be able to gain "unescorted " base access to take advantage of the Commissary, Exchange, and MWR facilities (and Education benefits???).

Veterans with a service-connected disability will need a Veterans Health Identification Card, or VHIC, to be able to gain access to the bases and use these facilities.

The VHIC must state the veteran’s eligibility. For example, the card must have a designation for Purple Heart, Former POW, or Service Connected rating. This is indicated on the card itself.

VA Health Benefits…

Next, if you are eligible for these privileges, read the following link…

Disabled Veterans and Caregivers to Gain Access to Exchanges, Commissaries, and Recreation Facilities…

So, this ID would give you access to the base and you should be eligible to take the test on a military base or post.

The requirements to take the test does not stipulate a Military ID Card… See this link…

FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix -- May 18, 2021…

When I spoke the Testing Proctor on Langley AFB, they were only concerned that I have "unescorted" (not needing someone to escort me…) and that I bring a government photo ID (I asked if a driver's license was OK and she said if it's our countries driver's license?)… She also went into detail about what I can and what I cannot bring to the test (no pens, no pencils, no paper, etc…, a non-electronic Magnifying Glass was OK…).

Finally, if you do not qualify for this FREE Exam, you might still be able to take the Commercial Exam ($175.00) without cost. Depending you your situation, unemployed, disabled, under employed, etc… You would need to do all the footwork yourself and contact various Fraternal Organizations, Benevolent Associations, Church, and Civic organizations where many are happy to help out…

Good Luck to All…

I did my recurrent online, FAAST site, after taking the test there is a certificate of completion that you can print along with a wallet sized one to show you are current. Not sure if that helps you.

Your license never expires, it has no expirations date, you just lose currency. After passing the test, you can print your Certificate of Achievement and keep a paper copy with your flight documents and the wallet size card with your hard license. You should also note your calendar to get your next certificate 24 months after the current one

Perhaps you missed this…

"When you take and pass the exam, you will receive credit for the course, and be able to print the certificate."

Thank you for this information Chief! I'm retired from the Air Force as well and I found a site at the Coast Guard station in San Francisco near the airport.. I'll verify access before scheduling the exam of course. If not there, I'll go to Travis AFB. I know I can go there.

I am so jealous...

I searched and these dates came up in the next two weeks and I am sure there are plenty more if this is too soon... Call first, make sure the testing proctor will be there, If you want to use your own magnifying glass make sure it is elctronic free and you only need a picture ID, The same one that got you throgh the gate... No pens, no paper, no phone, no watch (especially if it's one of those data ones...

Here is what I found for Travis...

I will post after this some more advice...

I will post after this some more advice...
In case you are a Pilot Institute Student, there are references in this, but if you are a self study, then, you just do nto get the PI bonuses...

Here is the Best Advice I can offer for preparing and taking the Part 107 Exam…

As a Pilot Institute Alumni who not only took the course, but Aced the Exam (Scored 100%), I am not blowing "prop wash" at you…

In the days leading up to the Exam, I would go through the various lessons, just to keep the information fresh. When I was ready for the exam, I did not keep going over the Pre-Exams over and over again. All you will accomplish is memorizing the questions and answers and if a similar question crops up on the Exam, you will likely jump at the answer that was similar to the Pre-Exam's answers.

Before the Exam, if possible, drive to the testing site just so you know where it is located and the parking situation. On the day of the exam, get there early, find a place to park and turn on some music to chill out (no Maverick soundtracks…). Do not sit in the parking lot cramming, you would not be there if you were not prepared, the cramming will only confuse you.

I also went to Harbor Freight and bought one of their $1.99 magnifying glasses, it's Good Quality and large enough to see the sectional maps…

Leave all your junk in the car (phone, pager, watch, pencils, pens, etc…), BUT DO NOT Forget your ID, without it, you cannot test. They are very unforgiving about that…

Before you get out of the car, take a deep breath and relax. Again, leave your cell phone in your car; you cannot have it with you during the exam.

I brought some paper towels with me to use in the facilities before the exam and wash and dry my face and hands (who wants to use toilet paper to dry off…).

You have two-hours to take the exam (so much time…). When the exam starts, there are 5-questions that do not count, perhaps to calibrate the exam or to ensure you read English… Maybe just to let you cool your jets… Who knows…

You will be provided with paper, pencils, a copy of the AKT Supplement, and a magnifying glass (the one I was provided I think came out of a cereal box…). I am glad I brought my own… If you bring your own, it cannot have any electronics in it.

The testing monitor will explain everything to you; ask questions if you have any, remember, you could be paying $175 for this exam, But it is FREE!!!!

Before you even start the exam, take one of those pieces of paper and tear off a piece and place it in the AKT on page 1-1, so the Legend is easy to find. The Legend is basically a Cheat Sheet, it contains the answers to so many questions, use it even if you are positive of the answer, check it. You do not want to miss a question because you become over-confident.

Remember that immediately after the Legend is the complete directory for the Chart Supplement (so in case they ask how far an airport is from a city, the answer is right there.).

Even though I knew my airspace inside and out, I checked it against the legend; knowing something too well might lead you to be over-confidence.

Final note about pages numbers in the AKT; remember, page numbers and figure numbers are close, but do not match. For example, Figure 25 is on page 24, don't confuse the two.

Now breath, you have two-hours and that is an awful long time.

When you do start the exam, read every question twice, I was lucky and I was the only one in the exam room and I read those questions aloud two times, it really makes a difference when you can also hear the question…

Then when you are positive of what the question is asking, try to answer it in your head and if your answer is there in the options, you probably are correct!

If you draw a complete blank, you can "mark" the question to come back to it later. Do that, a following question just might be phrased to actually answer that other question.

If you do not have any idea what the answer is, look for the most obviously wrong answers and eliminate them, then you have a better chance of getting it right…

As for going back over your exam after you are finished, I do not recommend it. It has been established that you will only "Second Guess" yourself and your original answer was your best bet.

As I wrote, I read every question two times and I still finished the exam in about 45-minutes…

It takes about 3 weeks to get the certificate. The Pilot Institute (PI) will send you a Free Shirt if you score 90% or better. I notified PI of my passing grade and included a copy of the Exam Results and the shirt (choice of Blue, Black, or White) arrived in about 3-weeks. I waited until my license to arrive before sending then a photo of my wearing the shirt (I chose Black…) and holding the license. Then afterwards, they sent me a $25 Gift Card too for posting it on Social Media because the photo is "So Great:" a handsome guy, wearing their shirt, holding a license… LoL…

Good Luck and remember, all Part 107 Licenses look the same; mine did come with Gold Trim…
