Think you've got something special there, you're a long way from Utah but Dr Travis Taylor at Skinwalker Ranch might be interested in those photos. Some ball lights seen in their sky when zoomed in closely are very similar in appearance to yours..

If you want to go cheap but still have a decent camera, get a DJI Phantom 4 series. Very affordable used and can carry the 500g you require. Plus there are many load release attachments available online. I'm still flying a few P4Ps because of their load carrying abilities. I use an outrigger...

Try not to not throw money at the problem. Boards can get expensive but often a loose or damaged ribbon replacement does the trick. YouTube can be very helpful if opening up required. Good luck and stay in touch

Looks like the takeoff location was a setup for failure, vehicles, pumps, concrete, overhead awning...Yikes. Add in a pilot in a hurry and you've got the makings of an instructional video "recipe for disaster" "how to lose/crash your drone in seconds". Sadly, it's bound to be repeated.

Yes the braking speed, rotational speed, and others are adjusted in the FLY app. You might want to play around with the settings before your next expedition, tune it to your liking. Sounds like your present setup is for filming video where slower = better result.

Don't always need to login to your home wifi, you can set up a wifi Hotspot in the field with your phone. Of course it helps if you fly with a different device than that phone.

Like others here I'm jealous, last visit to Maine was pre-drone but remember the many places a drone would have shined. There's nothing wrong with your little bird except lack of use.

Let us know if reinstalling FLY helps. Its kinda like rebooting your phone..it often fixes what ails ya.
