Barely flown. Near mint. No crashed or hard landings. It has been flown 13.4km and been in the air for 1.35 hours. It was a backup.

I have the D850, but it is for the dynamic range and ISO performance at night. I didn't care for the D800 for the reasons that you just stated. But, the 850 works for me... with really good glass.

I do all my photography and in-camera adjustments manually. So, I use thumbs only. I have never had an issue and I think the comfort and control comes from decades of video games.
Photographing rock art high on cliff faces means extremely precise flying. I don't even use tripod mode anymore...
A helicopter pilot once told me about the vortex ring state. It is interesting. I also encountered issues near a waterfall. More power is not the answer. Moving in any direction seems to be the solution.
