I do not have the Mini 1 or SE, but I recall reading that the Mini1 had some range issues. I do not know if they were addressed on the Mini SE or not. VLOS yes, but radio environment can have an effect on range. The Mini2's dual band has a better shot of overcoming environmental issues.

My friend has a cabin on the lake, I want to make a shot of coming in from the lake. I understand as long as I maintain a significant altitude(30 feet or so) should be ok. But I haven't done it yet. Maybe I'll get a wetsuit for it before I try. Though I do have CR and replacement coverage...

I do not know for sure, but as they use different transmission technology(Ocusync Mini2), I doubt it.

If I recall correctly, there are settings in the DJI Fly app that give the option to RTH(default) , land or hover. So one might want to check those.
