I would have stayed to see if the drone would reconnect or return to home rather than assume it was gone for good.
My suggestion to you is to get a new drone. Something like the Autel Evo. Autel probably would have replaced you drone as I heard a story very similar to yours and it was replaced...
The XR is overpriced. If you want the best phone for your money, the OnePlus 6T is the absolute best. You could also get a Galaxy S9 for less than the XR, and it has a MUCH better display with similar processor, more ram, similar camera.
If you are having trouble connecting, you should try using another cable plugged into the bottom of the RC. Make sure you unplug the side cable. If that doesn't work, try turning on USB debugging in developer options (you unlock developer mode by tapping the build number 10 times). Try resetting...
For those of us who develop apps, Google's Android is a much more friendly operating system. Android also provides a lot more customization options than iOS, like different launchers, widgets. Samsung's tablets have more powerful multitasking features, including the new Dex desktop experience.
The crash most likely occurred because there wasn't enough ambient light for the cameras to function. The most likely cause for your gimbal problems is a broken ribbon cable, I had to replace one of mine once. It is delicate work but can be done. Watch a video on Youtube on how to do it.
