Why can't I see the firmware in the VM

The whole point of using the VM is so that you don't load the new FW. It is paused at a point where the FW was already downloaded and ready to upload. So you will never see it as an option.

When you load the snapshot, do not close the DJI Assistant app. When you plug in your Mavic at that point and hit retry, it will upload the .0400 FW on to the Mavic, even though you don't see it in any list.

If you need more help, let me know. I'm out of town this weekend, but I can assist Sunday night or later. I'm in California time.

What can I do to bypass/*fix* nfz zone prompts?

Depends on the issue. And it's not bypassing it. It's being proactive. One potential issue I had was when I flew in the canyons in southern California where there is no Internet. Knowing this, I powered on the MP just before entering the canyons. If an NFZ update was required, then I'd do it there and then drive in. If not, then great. NOTE: I didn't need an update even though I was about 30 miles from home.
