Obstacle avoidance is nice. However, as Tentoes said, I was flying sideways. If I hadn't panicked, and yawed left or right, I think I would have been able to fly out of the branches. Lesson learned. :)
Yeah, I'm not so good at judging depth through a camera lens. I should have looked left and right with the camera before moving sideways. I was looking to get a cool shot of the rusty old railroad bridge and ran into the trees.

Was about to ask about variable ND filters here, but found some existing threads. Your comment about it being only slightly easier to switch the filter with a variable one makes sense. It's pretty easy to pop off a filter and put on a different one. You've got to land to do either one.
