It's not that there is anything wrong with it. It's that it has limits. Set your RTH altitude too low and you risk the craft running into something on it's return (OA is not perfect), and if you're just chilling out waiting for it to show up chances are it's going to hit whatever it was flying...

I like that the RTH function exists and make sure home point is set on every flight. I view it as an important feature in case of loss of signal. I set it for the environment I am flying, or set the drone to "Hover" if that is the more appropriate action in case of loss of signal. All that said...

Lots of folks get caught out by the speed at which a battery drops towards the end of a flight. The reason for this is that as battery voltage drops amp draw rises for a given load against it. The higher amp draw pulls the remaining charge out of the battery in a hurry.

I ran into a long pause around 83 percent or so. Completed fine. It's a long update. Forced myself to go do something while it was doing it's thing so I wouldn't be tempted to screw with it. I've run through two batteries since updating the RC & AC so far. No problems noted.

Like any aircraft, you need a decent place to launch. As others have said, try to get an open vantage point for launch because it sounds like your chances of a loss of signal and automatic RTH is high and you''ll want the Mavic to have a nice large open area to come back to if RTH it triggered...
