Guys I planned a mission 1 mile out and back to this huge flag that I am obsessed with in my area.About .8 miles away I lost internet and rc contact and the last screen view I had was right over the middle of the river. I switched to sport mode and back after a few minutes like I'v read here to regain control. But no rc either! After about 6 minutes not knowing her fate thinking she's gone, we hear her coming home,it was awesome. But the video stopped recording at about that time I guess, so only got half the video and a few pictures. This is that video.

Maybe the OP was using a powerful spotting telescope from a high position when flying that mission to maintain VLOS?

Lucky for him the bird made it home.

Stop with the drone police crap man,it gets old.

I am happy for the OP that he got it back, but I was merely pointing out the truth- neglegent pilots losing their drones and causing problems with them will be rhe end of a fun hobby and a loss of a career for some of us.

In fact, because this thread reminded me of certain attitudes towards the rules, while I am currently posting a job offer here in the southwest region threads for a 107 pilot,

Job proposal: 107 certified Pilots around Quartzite or Blythe, or willing to travel there for a few day job this spring?

I will also check applicants by their social media nicknames to review their posts to see what their online attitudes are about flying as lawful drone pilots. I’d be neglegent to my company and taking legal risks if I don’t.

VLOS has to be maintained without visual aids, but had the OP used spotters capable of taking control throughout the entire flightline, he would have been legal and much better off to take action if something happened.

Agreed. But then you didn't complain about the OP - just about the response. Why was that?

That’s OK, it was a wakeup call for me now that I was asked to do a project and get some help with doing it.

Because the OP wasn’t grilling someone else.

So you don't object to people breaking the law and posting about it, but you do object to others complaining when they do. That's definitely not a demonstration of "both sides getting old".

I use CrystalSky and haven't played with waypoints yet (Go4 hasn't been updated yet on that). So, I'm assuming you had the option to continue mission if RC signal is lost? That just blows my mind - it uploads all the flight data into the aircraft and it can fly the whole mission without any RC help at all?

It was lawful, 183 feet high, an accident. So we spend $700 on the most high tech drones in the world and can only fly around the sandbox in the back yard? Haven't you seen any videos from around the world.(just sayin')

Hi, I agree that it is sad we cant just fly freely like RC planes used to be able to do, and I’m sorry if I sounded like I was grilling you, but my point was that it wasnt good to let it fly that far out of your sight and control, even if it was at a “legal” height, it was out of sight and thats what the VLOS rule covers.

It’s great that you get a second chance to fly that again, hopefully legally too.

Actually no - if you want to argue legality it was unlawful because you intentionally flew the drone beyond VLOS. It would have been just as unlawful even if it had maintained control and video link for the entire flight. The fact that your drone can do that does not make it lawful. The fact that many people break that law does not make it lawful either. It's your choice, of course, but you shouldn't be surprised and have no basis to be offended if you get called out for publicly posting about it.
