I wonder why, since the infrastructure is there, they don't put the new ones on this site. It would seem it would lower cost to just replace the towers/windmills. Maybe one of "those" government secrets.
When you go out there, the closest modern turbines are about a mile from where most of these old ones are. It may be considered the same installation but the old and new are pretty far apart.It's a privately owned commercial project. No sinister government secrets.
@Evmoius, according to several references from a quick search the site wasn't shut down. The original turbines from 1985 were replaced with much larger, more efficient units and most (96%) of the old turbines were decommissioned. It appears that decommissioned means abandoned in place. Google maps has some interesting views of the area.
