Hi everyone,

Newbie here, I've had a Mavic Pro for about 6 weeks now. A good friend of mine has his ATP Rotorcraft Helicopter license as he has been a pilot for 20 years. Can he legally fly my drone for a a business that wants to use the footage in commercials ?

Hi and welcome. If in the US, he'll need to get a Remote Pilot's License as well to be in compliance. The good news is the 107 test should be pretty easy for him.

Yes we are in USA. So he or I would need a 107 ? The ATP license is not good enough to fly a drone for a business in exchange for monetary compensation ?

If he is a current ATP (or even a Private Pilot, for that matter) and had his biennial review he can take an online class (from the FAA, not a third-party vendor) and get his 107 Remote Pilot certificate. Check the FAA website.

Becoming a Pilot

Look down that page and find the section “Manned Pilots (Part 61 certificate holders)”

The 107 certificate is a separate rating and certificate...not an add-on rating.

For a current pilots of manned aircraft it’s easy.
