I transferred my first photos from the Mavic 2 Pro to my Mac yesterday and I noticed that they are stored with absurd names and long examples:

No .. it's not.
Where are you transferring from and how big are they?
Your images are saved to the microSD card and have imaginative names like: DJI_0218.JPG
I'm guessing you are looking at small, low-res cached images.

No no, 20mpx hyperlight photo, automatic mode

Anyone know if you can set the default name differently? Or a way to keep increasing the file name # even after transferring photos from the sd card? After I download it restarts at DJI001 and then I have to rename everything.

Look in your camera settings for the File Index Mode.
The options are Reset which resets to oo1 every flight and Continuous which will keep the numbers going as you are wanting.
