I would just because it helps hold it secure and not bounce around loosely

Keep using the gimbal guard. Even it means modifications to the case via carving foam away for clearance.

The gimbal is the most expensive part of the aircraft to repair from a "minor" incident.

The gimbal cover is the last thing I take off before flight and the first thing I put on after a flight when powering down.
