The Kalmar Nyckel Tall Ship of Delaware is docked this weekend at Battery Park in New Castle, DE. I'd like to do a flyby with my M2Z and get some video of this amazing craft. I'm definitely very close to the New Castle County airport and I'm attaching a shot of the new Visualize It web page of the area which shows a number of 200 in Battery Park.
Can I fly there? Will my aircraft start? Will I have to do some kind of unlock from my DJI Go App?
I hope this doesn't sound like a really stupid question; I'm just looking for some cool stuff to get interesting videos. I've also included a picture of the ship so you can see why I'd like to get some footage!73737

Only if you are a 107 pilot and get LAANC authorization. Otherwise no

If you do not have a remote pilot license, you're currently only allowed to fly in Class G airspace (no higher than 400 feet AGL) or in authorized fixed zones (like an AMA field) within controlled airspace.

I can’t say for sure that it won’t let you take off DJI geozones are too unreliable to determine that but you shouldn’t even if it does if you don’t have 107 and authorization. This is precisely why I think it sticks that the FAA stopped allowing recreational pilots to fly in controlled airspace before having a system in place for us to get authorization.

You could try calling the airport to give notice and see what they say. If you get ATC on the line you could tell them what you want to do and why. Worst thing that could happen is they say no then you are right back where you started

in the meantime, all of your friends are flying everywhere and getting pics of the tall ships and they have no 107 and nothing happens to them.

i follow the rules. which is why i am disappointed because the rules seems to only hurt and hamper the law abiding citizens. if i were told this is the case until july 1st, no problem. but this could go on for years. we need a temporary waiver in effect for the remainder of 2019.

Years? It only took them a pinch over 2 years to create and implement LAANC from the ground up so I feel confident they can "integrate" hobby into it in a much quicker time frame.

I do have one quick suggestion that could get you up and flying in Controlled Airspace as early as this week... go get your Part 107.... it's silly easy to get and doesn't even require you to have a drone let alone be able to fly one. Just do some hard core studying, take a few practice tests, and go take the full test in person. You'll be a safer more informed sUAS operator because of it and you'll have tons of freedom and allowances. As a plus you'll be able to get LAACN replies almost instantly....

That's a WIN-WIN-WIN!!

It's an interesting process and an entrance into the aviation world. Very helpful to study airspace, etc.

You can either use the apps provided by the companies listed here (for near real-time approval) or log into the Drone Zone and submit a Part 107 waiver (which can take up to 90 days).
On the FAA LAANC page referenced above the quickest approval will come from the sites with checks on the chart. I personably use AirMap, but get one that does real-time authorizations with a single submission as opposed to one that you have to receive and then enter some kind of code.

The companies that have no checkmark under the "Part 107 Near - Real Time Authorization" column likely don't offer apps where real-time authorization can be obtained.
