Good morning everyone.

Yesterday I went to a university trying to fly my drone. I checked my AirMap app when I arrived there. Both AMA and First Responder have cross sign on the screen.

I pulled the recreational menu down and saw 44809. I was confusing at that moment, so I did not fly the drone and went home.

Please let me know whether I can fly there if I have recreational license. What are the meaning of AMA and First Responder?

Hello,

My first suggestion is for you to do a lot of reading on airspace and FAA regulations, as well as AirMap itself. Some points regarding your question and proposed flying location:
  • AirMap is not and never has been an authoritative source for legal flying. It is always best to check the true source which is the FAA. In general though AirMap is correct and in this case it is indeed correct.
  • Those options at the bottom of the AirMap screen are simply choices you can toggle on and off to determine which airspace "rules" and restrictions AirMap shows on the map. You can change those at any time.
  • That particular spot you selected is clear of any restrictions and you are not in controlled airspace. However you need to be very careful because Midway International Class C airspace is right on the other side of I-90.
  • If you are launching or landing from University grounds, you might need permission from the University. The FAA only controls the airspace above, but not the ground itself.
Even without being in controlled airspace, remember to follow all FAA regulations including a maximum altitude of 400 feet and maintaining visual line of sight. Be safe and have fun!
