Hello all! I flew my MP Platinum today at the cape cod canal near the train bridge hoping to get some nice cinematic shots and in mid shot in tripod mode, the "canal police" approached me. They stated that the canal is a no fly zone for drones. I mentioned that it is not recognized on the no fly on the app or the FAA doesn't show it either. He had mentioned there is no ticket or repercussions. I got my one "didn't know" freebie. He asked me to spread the word that it is a no fly zone so I guess that's what I'm doing here. I haven't looked at the footage I got before he showed up, but I hope it's some decent stuff! Can't take why I already got from me! Muahahahaaaaaaa!
Happy flying everyone!

Under who's authority? Do they own the canal? What about the airspace above it?
I don't really know. But I didn't want to start any problems so I brought her in. But rest assured, I will be getting more footage by launching from private property in the near future!!

It’s not a no fly zone. I fly there all the time. Have actually spoke with the police there a few times also and none have cared. One cop stopped me as I was using active track on my boosted board and his only concern was for me to keep my eyes on the road not the controller! The only valid concern I would see would be the mass military reservations which is a tiny bit further south.

That's what I figured. Hence the reason I wanted to get some footage. I have flown there in the past. It this time they said no. I will find out more info on this matter soon.

Get an app like where2fly and post on there.

It probably can be deemed as a no flight zone by them up to a certain height, likely to be a minimum of 150ft.

The canal is maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers, which bans drones from a lot (if not most) of its properties. I can’t help but wonder whether this is another one of those situations where they try to ban takeoffs and landings from Corps land but can’t legally make it a no-fly zone.

Edited to add:

Yep, that’s the reason. This seems like overreach. I’d like to know what gives them authority to restrict the airspace:

Prohibition on the Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) on Federal Lands under the Jurisdiction of the New England District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers > New England District > News Releases

Yet if I avoid the restricted airspace around Otis AFB, I can fly my little PA-28 up and down the canal all day long... as low as 500' in some spots

The majority of the Cape is No Drone Zone due to the National Sea Shore. The Canal is off limits according to this:
