Castle in Lublin - a castle in Lublin, originally built in the 12th century, rebuilt many times. In the 16th century it was a royal residence, but in the 17th century it was destroyed. In the 19th century, rebuilt as a prison (1831–1954). Since 1957, the seat of the National Museum in Lublin.
Already in the 12th century, there was a wooden and earth stronghold on the hill, which was the seat of the castellan.
Around the mid-13th century, a Romanesque keep (residential and defensive tower) was added inside the fortifications. The lower floors were built of crushed stone, and the upper floors were made of brick. Frequent invasions of Lithuanians, Tatars and Ruthenians prompted Casimir the Great to build a brick castle in the first half of the 14th century, replacing the wooden and earth stronghold.
It included: a tower, a residential house, a gate, the Holy Trinity Chapel, the Jewish Tower and defensive walls. In 1418, at the request of King Władysław Jagiełło, the church, which was also a castle chapel, was decorated with polychrome in the Ruthenian-Byzantine style, which is one of the most valuable monuments in Poland.
