Before shopping for a RPA/drone, I installed the free DJI GO app. I went into a D1 store (official DJI store) here in Sydney. I even showed the sales assistant I had installed the DJI GO app. 'That's no good - you need 'DJI GO 4' app'.
Are they different - is DJI GO superseded?

I bought a second-hand drone via Gumtree. Do I also need to install DJI GO 4 on the controller and Mavic 2 Pro as well?

Do the controller and drone need upgrades from time to time?

The apps are different and no you do not need to install the app on the controller nor the drone. It goes on the phone ONLY.
However you may be told the firmware of the drone and controller need updating.
If not cumpulsory then you should spend some time browsing the forum to see what others do. Some people don't update, others do.

If your drone is the Mavic 2 Pro, the appropriate app for it is DJI Go 4
The DJI Go 3 app is only good for the Phantom 3 series drones.

If you have a Mavic 2 pro and haven't found the manual yet, it's here:
