What's the cheapest, mangiest, not-locked phone you can get that will run DJI Fly reliably?

I'm thinking of getting a phone that I only use for the drones.

If it doesn't need it's own phone line, but can just use WiFi to one, so much the better.

Suggestions?

Thx,

Depends on your budget! I bought an iPhone XR with a broken camera for £140, works beautifully, keep it in the drone bag!

I'm currently using an iPhone 8 but I'm going to be getting a used iPad Mini 5. The screen on my iPhone is too small.
The icons are difficult to see & touch.
This is coming form a Hardware EE that is used to looking at "really tiny" surface mount components on a printed wiring board.

My "budget" is to spend as little as possible for a unit that will reliably load and run DJI Fly. Definitely under $100 US!

And, your comment prompted me to realize that I don't need new for this purpose. I'm generally a "buy new" kinda guy, but for this purpose it would add no value.

Thx!

I've never had any Apple phone, and I'd like to stick with the Android ecosystem that I know and love.

And which is almost invariably cheaper!

Just picked up a cheap Samsung tablet for just this reason.
I'm inclined toward a phone rather than a tablet for this purpose, but since you raised the issue, I now need to look at why I'm inclined that way.

Thx!

Well, if you're thinking about a tablet now you might want to look into the Asus Zenpad Z8s. It's fully functional including compass at about $100 U.S used. You'd just need a printed adapter that runs about 10 bux and the stock cord from DJI reaches and fits about as compact as can be. A number of us have been using these with the Fly app with zero problems.

I use my old Samsung Galaxy Note 5....no cell service. I keep it in airplane mode and with bluetooth turned off.

When flying away from home, I turn on my current cellphone's wifi hotspot and connect the Note 5 for internet access.

And the Note 5 was free to me - a hand-me-down from my son.

Never a problem running Fly app...even latest update.

So is the iPad Mini 5 fully compatible with the Fly App? It's not on the "DJI Approved" list?

What other small Android pads are compatible that are not on the DJI list? Finding my iPhone XR a bit small.

So that actually runs DJI Fly? That's interesting, I have a Galaxy S7 phone which most certainly would *NOT* run DJI Fly.

Still, predicting which phones will work and which ones won't is largely sorcery, so maybe that's the case.

If it really does work, and I can get one cheap, that may be just the ticket.

Thx,

I find all phones useless as anything other than a flight instrument. If I want to actually watch a vid, I'll transfer it to my 10" Samsung tablet, or watch it on the big screen TV.

Wow - that is very interesting that the S7 isn't working for you.🙀

My current phone is the Note 8, but I have not installed the Fly app.

Perhaps the "Note" makes the difference.

My old Galaxy S7 was just the S7, not the "Note" version.

My new S20 is the Note version, and it works flawlessly.

It might be interesting to talk to DJI and/or Samsung about this, but that's a task for another day...

Thx!

Sounds like good news then, thank you for the reply! Silly as it sounds, not the only but, the primary, reason for deciding on the iPhone 13 MP is AirTag. Bike, car, drones, dog, clean underwear, etc, etc, etc!

Thank you!
