Following the release of the DJI Flip, I'm curious as to how the Mini 3 (non-pro) compares. I currently own one, and am wondering if its worth it to "upgrade". They are similar in price, but is it worth it to sell my Mini 3 for the flip? How does the camera on the Flip compare? What are your thoughts?

The Flip is not replacing the Mini line of drones. Rumor has it that DJI plans to release a Mini 5 later this year.

Since the cameras are quite similar, upgrading just for the camera may not be worth it. Here are the specs side-by-side:

Who is the Flip for? Here's what DJI mentions in the Flip FAQ:

DJI Flip is DJI's first drone equipped with a foldable full-coverage propeller guard, making it ideal for aerial photography, everyday recording, and leisure activities.
  • At less than 249 g, DJI Flip weighs about as much as an apple and fits in the palm of your hand. It features a foldable full-coverage propeller guard, ensuring safe flight.

  • DJI Flip features a 1/1.3-inch sensor, capable of recording 4K/60fps HDR video with an optional 10-bit D-Log M color format. It supports various shooting modes and offers full HD video transmission up to 13 km** with DJI O4. DJI Flip also includes intelligent features like FocusTrack, QuickShots, MasterShots, and Hyperlapse.

  • Once the arms are unfolded, DJI Flip powers on automatically. Simply press the mode button on the side to quickly switch between intelligent shooting modes and take off from your hand for instant filming. Flip automatically does the rest to capture impressive footage.

  • DJI Flip excels in both high-altitude and low-altitude flights, delivering stunning close-up tracking that makes it feel like you have your own personal cameraman.

Thank you. I find the Mini 3's most limiting factors being the limited functionality in terms of smart features, although its not a large issue. Interesting how the cameras are similar however.

JUST MY OPINION
Since you can fly now I would hold out for the Mini 5 Pro ,as it is now the Flip and the mini 3 has the same camera again in my opinion only is a no brainier

If noise is important to you, then your Mini 3 is going to be much quieter than the Flip.

Let's try and estimate an answer.

A refurbished Mini 3 FMC (RC-N1) goes for U$469 from DJI. So a reasonable estimate for what you might get on eBay for a used Mini 3 FMC is probably $350.

The Flip with one battery and the RC-N3 for $439. Setting aside the 2 fewer batteries and charge hub for a moment, your looking at around $90 to buy:
  • Significant camera features (see post #2, dlog-m, etc.)
  • Dramatically safer OOP
  • more rugged, portable
  • Phone control, don't need to carry the remote
  • Autonomous selfie quickshots
  • Autonomous follow/tracking
  • Dang ugly
Those are some reasons if they appeal to you. The last one alone is reason to empty your bank account to get one. MHO 🤣
