Does iPad need to be cellular?

I’m thinking of getting a new iPad Pro to use with the controller on my MA2.

I have a cell phone but want to see bigger screen.

Do I need an iPad that has cellular and WiFi? Or just WiFi.

Just wifi is fine.

Ideally turn this off when in use.

The only thing you don't get if you don't have mobile data (Internet) access on the iPad, is the real-time mapping.
You can get around this by 'pre-cacheing' maps for the area you are going to fly in (see YouTube vids about how to do this), or by 'tethering' (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) your iPad to your cellphone to give it Internet access that way.

You also won't have GPS on the iPad, but few use any functions, such as setting HP to RC location, that use the mobile GPS.

After my ipad mini 2 didnt run the dji app i bought a new mini5..
It is a cellular version.
Question do i need to turn off the cellular prior to flight or is it ok to leave on for the mapping? I have een leaving it on and I don think it has caused any issues

I have a Mavic Mini. I use a iPad Mini series 2 with only WiFi in combination with hotspot from my iPhone 11. The DJI Fly app, GPS, live mapping and HP works fine.

You can if you like.
But it won't make much difference either way.

It has a possibility with effecting range. Although it shouldn’t , it has been recommended by others more knowledgable than me, to turn WiFi off.

Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and that will save some battery power in the iPad, and will also stop some interference with the controller, as it uses the same frequency channels as the WiFi services. Mobile data is OK - so you can leave it on, and that will keep your real-time map working.
