I think so - because the RC receives signal from AC and transfers to mobile via cable.

That's the way it works, but you can fly the Mavic without a phone attached to the RC controller (but you loose camera view and a lot of other features of course).

Bird will fly w/o a display but look at everything you don't have access to.

For best reliability, I strongly suggest using the bottom USB port to connect to the display. The side port will work but there have been many problems of intermittent connections or video problems solved by switching to the bottom port.
