Hello all

Coming back to DJI after a US manufacturer unceremoniously ended their support for consumer/prosumer and went completely US government contract and enterprise... but the one thing I really appreciated about that other model was the fact that using a GPS beacon I could have it track one of my dogs that is going thru Search and Rescue training (specifically open area search).

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to effectively leverage the Mavic 3 Pro in a similar capacity - especially with respect to following and tracking the dog. I've tried ActiveTrack (which of course doesn't really work with pets even when wearing a bright orange vest). But is there another mode that might work (other than trying to pilot in behind him)? Can the mavic pro track the remote and follow that as if it were a beacon? I was wondering if I could get the mavic to follow the controller...

I'm open to any suggestions.. I love the video capability of the Mavic 3 Pro and would love to be able to leverage it for this.

Other than Active Track, Try POI

I thought POI only looked at specific locations during a waypoint flight.. is there something I'm missing in the documentation?
I used POI on my granddaughter and it worked pretty well

Question How does Following the Dog Help in your Training? Doing search and rescue I can see the need for the dogs to get used to the Drones BUT Shouldn't you teach the dog to follow the drone somehow? Honestly just curious.
Following a Dog is alot to ask of Active Track. I have tried a bunch to make a DJI follow a good sized Remote control truck using Active Track none of them can do it. I would love to do some type of search and rescue but in my State its pretty much cut-off from us civilians.:(

EXCELLENT question.. it's not for the dog.. it's for the trainer.. so we can watch and see what the dog is doing and observe the behaviors..

Here let me show you and example.. I did this with a Skydio 2 and a beacon attached to my dog's harness... using this we can watch what my dog does and then determine how best to follow up with modifications to his training.

Right now to do this with the DJI I'll have to manually pilot.. which I could probably pull off but I'd have to be quick on the stick.. :)

Very cool! The only way I could see to do that for the time being with a DJI is to fly it manually also. You would have to invest in a different setup Maybe DJI is getting better at tracking probably in the near future maybe.
NEO!?
Do you work for the Government in your Search and Rescue operation? I have always wanted to do something like that BUT its just not possible to be a Drone pilot here in California for search and rescue.

One dog will be titled in competition and the other we are looking into registering her for SAR.

Looks like a good ad for the Skydio. I have tried unsuccessfully to track a dog with my Mavic 3. It takes quite a bit of skill to do this manually.
