Drone shot at today!

I was just under 250 feet. I don't know how many shots he took at the drone, as I didn't even know I was being shot at. We heard at least 20 shots so....
Most semiautomatic handguns have a 3 to 5 inch barrel and wouldn't get within 5 feet at 250 ft away. It must have just been a luck shot (or unlucky in your case) that he hit it at all. That said, shooting at any aircraft is highly illegal and not good. Glad the damage was minimal.

Reportedly, a lot of gun shots and more concerning, a lot of laser beam strikes on drones recently. Actors have no idea if these drones are law enforcement or civilian yet they continue to treat them as threats. I can't say I'm surprised given all the hateful rhetoric against drones lately.

I didn't bring my controller back to my home office today, so I only have the .SRT files are available to me this evening until I go back to my shop across town in the morning. Is it the .DAT file that is needed for the upload to Phantomhelp?
The .DAT would be quite useful in this situation. If a bullet hit a prop that would be evident in the motor, accelerometer and gyro data. These data don't exist in the .txt log file but do exist in the .DAT log file. If you have the .DAT recorded on the RC then please attach to a post.

This sounds horrific and thank goodness we don’t get that over here although I am sure there will have been cases. Glad you got your drone down safely. May I naively ask what is a CCP?
In our country in some places (Bakersfield) if you call the police, you will be told that the officers are busy and it will take some time to get to your call.
Having a permit to carry a weapon (CCP) protects you from harm from the "Karen" while you wait patiently for the authorities to arrive.
It also gives them thought to hurry when you tell them you have someone at gunpoint and will defend yourself if needed.

Part of a drone pilot’s kit should now include a CCP for self defense!
(I'm assuming you mean concealed carry permit. If not, disregard this.)

What good would have a weapon done in the situation described by the OP? What better outcome might have been achieved? It's absurd to suggest that drone pilots need to carry weapons. This is just stoking unjustified fear.

Only in the U.S., and It’s really because of unjustified fear that it’s being suggested… but that’s all I’ll say about it.

Glad the bullet didn’t hit anyone. My neighbor had one come through their bedroom roof last 4th of July. Of all the stupidity some people have, shooting into the air has to be one of the most serious examples.

Didn't a couple of state governments and the federal government recently change their mind and even told the rest of the country that it's a good idea to have the capability and the authority to use force to bring down a drone even if it involves firing a weapon into the air?

So sheriff deputies came today and dismissed the whole thing. Blamed me for being near the person's property. Said he was just protecting his home. WTF?
Protecting it from what? When I asked them about the stray bullets that landed who knows where, they said they didn't care.
Hopefully, the FAA/FBI will take a different position. One of the sheriff's deputies said she was also a part 107 pilot. Again, WTF!

I hate to say it, but Sheriffs office deputies are among the lower IQ individuals that get involved in law enforcement and I wouldn't put too much emphasis on what they said. They likely are just too lazy to follow up with an investigation and it sounds like they are ignorant of the regulations when it comes to airspace and flying drones. Wait for the FAA's response.

Where I live, the Sherrifs office is primarily responsible for prisoner transport, sheriffs sales, etc..I am surprised they even came out to visit you to be honest.

Does your state have laws allowing people to shoot at drones? Only a couple of states have passed such laws.

Also, nobody owns the airspace over any land. The FAA regulates civilian airspace, not state, not local laws.

Were you hovering directly over that person's house? That's no excuse for him shooting at the drone, but it's also not good practice.

Did he actually fire at the drone during that time? I see no muzzle flash or indication of recoil.

For sure that is gunfire. And for sure, that is not 250 feet.

I think he's just saying a ccw would have been helpful if the (op's) situation escalated and self defense was necessary - not that it was needed/useful in this specific situation. Although those dumb/aggressive enough to shoot at any aircraft should be treated with vigilant 'caution.'

Side note: I carry when i drone for the exact same reason i carry most other times - protection, defense.

thanks guys!

Only stopped and hovered after hearing repeated gunfire. I was trying to determine where it was coming from. I did not know the person in the video was shooting until several hours later and was able to view it on the computer. The 4K video is much clearer than the crappy1080 on YouTube. 214 feet AGL. video was set to 4x zoom Mavic Air2S

Yep, he’s clearly shooting at the drone. I’m definitely seeing the recoil from his gun when I zoom in.
