We see lovely videos being taken with various equipment, but how do you edit the footage, apply transitions, music overlays etc. Also what's the legalities with using music that's blatantly not yours?

You select an editor and start practicing.

Don't use it. I've seen stories of commercial videographers being fined thousands of dollars for copyright infringement. There are a ton of sites out there offering royalty free music. Even YouTube has a library - see here.

What software do people use?

I've been using the free version of Davinci Resolve and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's a fantastic piece of software.

Look on Youtube for Redshark Davinci Resolve tutorials and you'll be up and running in no time.

You can find a list of commonly used video editors here.

It depends on where you post your videos. I know websites like YouTube will take down videos if using music without permission. If you want to prevent that from happening, stick with royalty free music (or get permission first). You can find royalty free music here.

For royalty free music there is several paid services out there. If you’re looking for free royalty free music take a look at the Music Screen Library.. great ressource!
