I posted this same discussion over on the other forum but it's not getting any traction so I brought it over here.

All,

I am doing some video work at a local dirt track and need to extend my battery capacity. The maximum distance from the home point would be 1,000' or less and the maximum height would be 200' or less. Agility/maneuverability of the drone will not be a factor as most of the time I'm pretty much sitting still.

The drone being used right now is a M2P. What is a realistic expectation in flight time with whatever modification you recommend.

While we are on the subject of videoing races what is everyone's preferred method of collecting sound for the video. Do you just use the sound collected by your control device or do you have some other means of collecting sound?

Thanks in advance for your time and consideration!

M2 runs at 27 minutes stock I believe? How much flight time or battery capacity are you wanting to add? Easy thing to do is run another battery in parallel. A 4S battery. My knowledge lies more with the M1.

I wondered what the flying time record could be for a stock MP2 - contenders could only loose weight on it without adding spare batteries. Does it need the plastic cover on the body? They could turn off the LED lights and sensors, and even drill holes in the other parts wherever possible. The lower one flies AGL, the less power they need as well. All this may only extend flight time a minute or so. I think TexasFlytography is right, a spare battery is the ticket. The only other option is to have a second M2P up in the air while the other one is at the pit stop.

As for sound, get a hand held digital recorder like a Zoom. They have good mics and sampling rates for high quality stereo audio.

What kind of races are you filming? I do motocross races in sport mode with my mp and I can easily get each moto in on a single battery. If you are doing oval racing maybe better to have a tethered drone.

Oval dirt track. The cautions are what kills it! A fresh battery at the beginning of each class would do the trick if they would come on to the track in the order they are going to start but they don't do that. They come on the track and make 15 laps around trying to get everyone in their correct starting place before they take off, then within the first lap or two they crash one or two and cruise around the track another 10 laps while the tractor gets to them and gets them off the track. Then we're off to the races again. Thinking about putting me a piece of plywood about 24" square on top of one of the light poles out there so I can land and conserve battery while they sort out everything. LOL
