FAA Drone ID Proposal- Round Two

Of course they are moving forwards - the comment period is for constructive comments on the method - not pointless requests not to implement anything at all, which seemed to comprise the bulk of the responses. The next phase is to finalize the requirements and mechanisms.

I have always thought that the NPRM was just a pointless federal agency requirement/procedure to implement Remote ID. Smoke & mirrors. Is the concept needed, yes, was the affected public really considered/invited, no. The list of providers pretty much speaks volumes. This was decided some time ago.
As stated, finalization is all remains.

FAA announced 8 companies for Remote ID today. Airbus but not Boeing, T-Mobile the only mobile company. Oh and Amazon.

Does this mean they're going forward with the proposal, to heck with all the public comments?

Got my new M2P today and noticed it already has settings for Remote ID. My spark didn't have that.

Interesting in how it will works with the smart controller though, since the SC doesn't have an internet connection.

I'm not so sure about the internet connection. There is a setting on my SC called WIFI. I keep it turned off for privacy reasons and to prevent hacking/viruses, etc. Who''s to say all your flight records aren't uploaded during system upgrades or by syncing your flight records to the cloud? Maybe?

Remote ID Cohort Information

Thanks for the questions we received after yesterday’s press release on the Remote ID Cohort. To clarify, the Cohort is not part of the decision-making process for the proposed Remote ID rule final rule. The Cohort will help the FAA develop technology requirements for other companies to develop applications needed for Remote ID. The comment period on the Remote ID Notice of Proposed Rulemaking closed on March 2, 2020, and the FAA is reviewing the more than 53,000 comments.

They will do what they want. Still not sure why they want all drones to transmit an ID. If I am flying around my yard at 50ft, that is hardly a danger to aircraft or the public. I also wonder if all the drones we all own with be able to be retrofitted with some kind of add-on device to make them compliant.

So you would be okay with being restricted to flying only in your yard, up to 50 ft, in order to avoid this requirement?

The real problem is that many drone fliers do what they want. I have a friend who works for the forest service controlling fire operations during forest fires. She claims they often get reports of drones causing problems for tanker air drops. A huge disservice to land owners, and conservation in general. At one fire last year someone with a Phantom type drone diverted 6 tanker drops. Until people stop doing stupid things with drones, the government will have to act. Not saying some might still break the law even if ID is put into place but it will stop a great deal of those flying out of compliance. BTW I am against the current proposal as written but it's obvious something has to be done.

The only thing these regulations will do is keep honest people honest.

folks that disregard FAA regulations now like flying above 400 ft, not staying clear from emergency responders areas, maintains VLOS of thier drone, etc are still going to violate these refs along with the remote ID regs when put in place.

But once it's in place those violators "could" be more easily identified and dealt with.
