Filming Car Accidents? Morbid? Ethical? I don't want to end up like Jake G. from Nightcrawler.

At best your making an unnecessary nuisance of yourself. Let people get on with what is already an exceptionally difficult job without added distractions.
Depending on who you talk to, one could argue that every drone flight is a nuisance.

True. Most would agree that flying around an emergency response of any kind unless you are associated with the operation is a very bad idea. Aside from it being illegal.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. This is NOT illegal per national, state, or city laws. This is NOT a wild fire. Minnesota only finds it illegal if I interfere with emergency services. I definitely didn't interfere with them. And actually, law enforcement can review this footage and see that the red vehicle in the opposite lane was causing traffic to slow down and in the future a safer rescue environment could be achieved by making sure no one parks in the flow of traffic.

So if you did nothing wrong why did you edited the post and removed the video?

Just strange that I found another page from faa.gov stating flight is prohibited during emergencies, but only lists hurricanes and wildfires. Airspace Restrictions

But you're right, #10 IS clear. I'll take down the video. Thanks for finding that detail.

You did the right thing, Corey, in taking it down. Sorry about that, I can understand your excitement of getting a news event on film, perhaps It’s best just not to go for that kind... Maybeyou can get a part 107 license and work for a local news agency, but even so you have to get a waiver to fly emergency scenes. Another option would be as a volunteer pilot for the fire or police department...

Filming the traffic backed up did give me the idea of using drones to monitor traffic and help law enforcement figure out where to divert traffic in times of major traffic jams. It was really obvious one of the cars was parked in the way in the West bound lane from the sky, but probably not as obvious from the ground.

UPDATE: I removed this video because I was going off Minnesota Drone Law which states it is illegal to INTERFERE with emergency services..."§ 1370. Interference with wildfire suppression, law enforcement, or emergency response effort by operation of unmanned aircraft"
but someone was kind enough to point out that it does not hold to FAA guidelines which states...Recreational Flyers & Modeler Community-Based Organizations #10
"Never fly near emergencies such as any type of accident response, law enforcement activities, firefighting, or hurricane recovery efforts."
So video removed and lesson learned. Luckily on the faa.gov page right below #10 it states...
"Recreational flyers should know that if they intentionally violate any of these safety requirements... they could be liable for criminal and/or civil penalties."
Since I did not INTENTIONALLY violate this safety requirement and removed the video hopefully no action will be taken.

@BingErr i am glad you removed the video however good your intentions were at the time ,the only time you should really fly over such an event, is if the rescue services had specifically asked you to ,because it would have been beneficial to there investigation into the crash and you would have been flying with their permission, good man for taking on board the comments made by others

I think the takeaway from NightCrawler was that Loius was an Inately sociopathic
Survivor type, who showed "us" that hard work was necessary to succeed in America, but the combination of
this & Ruthless disdain for individual life could be the key to getting the right peoples attention.
And when you got the wrong person's attention, perhaps you could be teflon.

Since i missed the video, I cant say what type, but you've attracted attention that's for sure

Med evac would not have been used in this situation since it was a mile from the hospital. Would have taken more time to use the heli.

Not always applicable.
Med-evac is often used to transport a patient to a hospital with the best facilities and personnel available to treat the patient in the shortest time. This is often not the closest hospital for many possible reasons.
Med-evac is also used when no ambulance is available to respond or if the route is impassable for any reason.

Other people misfortune porn, ugh. Thats what %50 the TV nightly news is.
It could happen to You too! Stay scared and buy stuff

Why is people dying horribly even news?
Do you have owe it to the community to accept your 15 minutes, whether it's Biggest Pumpkin in Fair or "look, i died in a 5 car pileup".

I think he started as a sociopath. Showed him stealing and assaulting before he started filming. Then those character flaws made him change and interact with his stories. Bill Paxton's character also filmed accidents, and although he is calloused, he is not dangerous.

Well since everyone is now an expert on our local hospital and heli transport here are a few things I've learned from living in Rochester for 20 years, and the last 5 lived less than 1 mile from the helipad. Getting the helicopter off the pad is not as simple as just starting your car and pushing the gas. I can hear the rotors start from my house and it takes them several minutes (3-5 minimum) to get the bird in the air, and then they fly slowly as they gain elevation and get away from the nearby buildings. I could easily beat the helicopter in a 1 mile race in my car (or ambulance). 2nd, they would not transport to another hospital. Mayo Clinic is world famous and literally 1 mile away. Any patient serious enough to need med evac would not fly 90 miles to the twin cities or any podunk hospital along the way. 3rd, in my 20 years of living in Rochester I've never seen Mayo One land in the city. EVER. Why, because it's slow and there's probably not a lot of places safe enough to even land. Powerlines, light poles, trees, people, houses. We don't have excessive traffic so a vehicle on the ground is faster than a helicopter in city limits. 4th, I was actually at the scene of an accident a few years ago where someone fell 30 feet and broke their spine. We were on the outskirts of town. It was a new neighborhood with empty lots and plenty of space to land a helicopter. Guess what... they drove an ambulance. And I followed them back to the hospital in my car, and a normally 15 minute drive took about 4 since we didn't have to stop for traffic lights. So even in that case where it was farther out of town, the experts knew it was faster just to send an ambulance.

Anyway, I admitted above that I was unknowingly in the wrong. I've removed the video and I explained why and listed the law that I should have followed and the law that I thought I was following. Anyone who wants to chastise me for filming it has all the right to because again... I was wrong.

But if anyone else wants to tell me how my hometown medical services operate and they don't actually live in my home town, well they can go piss against the wind.

Thanks

Do you look at car accidents when you drive by or do you overt your eyes in respect of the people involved?

The latter, for the reason you listed and im not into gore. I think if you are, you have your switches mixed up.

I could waste a experience regarding a car accident, that affected me, on your little psycho thread
But it's/your literally not worth it.

Our posts are being read by people world wide and can relate to situations experienced by each of us. Very few of us live so close to a major medical facility.
My post, that apparently caused you much distress, did not comment on your specific situation but simply offered some reasons why helicopters might be used instead of land transport, anywhere.
As quadcopter pilots, we must be cognizant of situations where we may endanger others and behave appropriately or we will certainly suffer more regulations and restrictions.
I did not mean to contradict you nor to deride your post.
Just saying..
Have a great day and fly safe.

Being into gore and curious about what is happening is quite different. I bet 95% of the people driving by this accident looked. That's why the phrase "Like a car accident, you can't look away" is used pretty frequently.
Does everyone who runs a camera for a News Station automatically become a sociopath?
