My mavic is 2 weeks old and I did the firmware update requested when I first connected the controller, mavic, and Go 4 app at that time. I've flown twice since then, no problems. I've read about the latest update here and I connected everything last night and was prompted to update 1) the NFZ, (no apparent problems), then 2) the v1000 firmware. Battery was fully charged and controller had over 80%, iPhone 7 at 90+%.

The update went to 100% completed within maybe 10 minutes but the app screen with the animated dots falling into the folder icon kept running and never indicated the update was complete. After doing this another 20+ minutes I thought maybe once it says100% I should just go back a screen and check my settings. However, that screen still indicated I needed to do the firmware update so I went back to the screen with the animated download folder and it still showing 100% completed at the bottom. After another half hour I just shut everything down - app, mavic, controller in that order.

I'm thinking I will recharge the batteries and try again, but I thought I'd seek advice here first. I know some here have had to try it more than once. What surprised me was how quickly the NFZ info and few update showed 100% complete. But my pleasure was short lived. BTW the gimbal lock was off.

Likely your update went through. Turn it on and see what it says. If it failed, it may re-initiate the update (the files are uploaded to the Mavic and it does the update once there, separate from the mobile device or the Internet). If not, it may request you complete the update all over again. It's not uncommon for the update to fail or for the update to get stuck showing 100% and yet actually be completed. Either way is not an issue.

Better to upgrade the firmware via DJI Assistant on a computer with a decent Internet connection. Updating through cell service invites some problems due to download speeds and inconsistent data connections.

If worse comes to worse, you can always connect your Mavic to your computer through Assistant and hit "refresh" on the firmware, and it will redo the update. But don't freak out about the failure to complete the update or show completed. Turn it on, move forward, update if necessary, and fly!

Lisadoc, thanks for the input, it sounded right. However when I connected today the update firmware still appeared on the Go 4 app. This time it was successful and took 20-30? Minutes to complete. The first time I didn't have SD card in the mavic so maybe that was the problem, though there was no notice to do so. The second time I inserted the card just in case. Could that have been it? I've read a lot of folks had to do it more than than once to be successful.

No need for an SD card to update. Firmware isn't placed there.

20 - 30 minutes for an update suggests that you're doing it through your cellular network and you're having issues with keeping a steady/fast connection through your cell network. This is why I suggested doing it through your computer instead, and potentially why it hung the first time through. No matter. You're updated and good to go.

I did the update through the go4 app on my iPhone through the wifi connection in my home. I'm unclear what you mean by "doing it through your computer." I picture connecting the controller to the computer and the mavic to the computer. Would that be right? If so, 1) are the required connection cables included with the mavic, and 2) does the go4 app available on a pc (windows) or do I need dji assistant (which I haven't looked at yet).

If my picture is wrong please enlighten me. I appreciate your help, thanks.

That's exactly right. You connect each one (separately is better) to your computer via a regular micro USB cable (on the left side of the RC or on the opposite side of the SD slot on the Mavic) and do the update through DJI Assistant. Here are instructions:
