Flight Permissions for the Mini

I was trying to fly out by Lake Cachuma in CA. There is this old abandoned airfield, but it is still on the map and it is like hitting an invisible shield. But when I try to get access thru Kittyhawk....the first thing it asks for is my registration number. I thought people bought the Mini cause you didn't have to register it? Should I register?will then be able to get permission to fly when I need it? Also....I don't have cellular on my mini......can I do it from home and tell them a timeframe?

I bought the mini for exactly that reason. However if I have to get permission to fly in a particular bit of airspace, I'm expecting the authorities to want to know who I am, what drone I'm flying and related stuff.

If I was flying something heavier they'd want that for airspace which doesn't need permission first. The rules change soon where I am and I will have to register the mini anyway.
