Hi all

Curious to see what others run at, I’m in the uk when flying what height do people fly at to make sure they will clear power cables etc specially on long range flights and what RTH altitude is set at.

Thanks

it all depends on the location that you are flying at, and a good starting point for RTH height is 40m this will clear most tall trees
also you need to be at at least 150 ft AGL if you are flying over the odd house or person to comply with the drone code
of course if you are in a secluded area then you can fly lower than 150 ft as long as you do not spook animals or wild life in the process
with my MPP i like to be at around 200 ft then i know i am going to be clear of most obstacles

I find i don't use a "1 size fits all" approach for flying height. Instead I fly at the height needed for what I've planned for that flight or what weather conditions dictate as a maximum, while doing my best to keep within the upper 120m limit. Some flights have been up above 100m AGL for a lot of the time. Other flights top out at 10m altitude. Pylon heights above ground can vary a lot. Some navigable rivers have very high pylons over them, some valleys have very high wires.

My RTH height is typically around 25 -30m as that puts me above most obstacles near me, but I have, at times, checked the height above takeoff point for any particularly high obstacles and reset my RTH height accordingly. I only use RTH for if/when I lose signal, and then I usually take over control again when signal is restored, but thats just my personal preference.

As low as is possible to achieve what I want, at home rarely more than 30m, 20 ish m required to clear the surrounding trees. Away from home 400ft AGL is my deliberate max limit though I have accidentally hit a cheek clenching 875ft due to accidentally dragging the RTH height to that and the RTH occurring at a loss of connection and my not knowing I was able to halt the climb with the throttle joystick once control was regained (thanks Meta4) middle of p14 of the manual
" n Smart RTH and Low Battery RTH, the aircraft automatically ascends to the RTH altitude. If the aircraft is at an altitude of 65 ft (20 m) or higher and has not yet reached the RTH altitude, the throttle stick can be moved to stop the aircraft from ascending. The aircraft will fly directly to the Home Point at its current altitude "

If flying from my garden then I took go a few metres above the top of the tallest trees - so around 40m. If I'm out by the canal, then I'm much lower, maybe 20m. It all depends on what obstacles are around and what I'm doing - if I'm wanting a panorama I might go as high as 100m, but only if wind speeds allow.

Typically, mine is set to 200’ which will clear trees and high power lines around our home. If I could get away with setting it lower, I would due to wind. Every place you fly is different though.
