Recently when shooting with the sun just off to the side I was getting some horrible flair. I knew I had a Freewell ND8 on my Mavic 4 Pro so I thought I might as well see if it's the filter or inherent in the angle to the sun. Turns out it's the filter. I'm generally happy with these filters but wonder if others have "tested" their filters in similar conditions ie with the sun just out of the image. That is the most taxing test for lenses and filters. Here are the examples. You can figure out which is which...
These are RAW with no sharpening (which RAW always needs) or other post processing.
The project was/is about the inversion layer that we experience in Fairbanks/North Pole which is demonstrated by the steam going up then hitting the inversion layer and being blown horizontally. In the distance is the Eastern Alaska Range. Note all the many small plumes from houses, many of which are wood burning stoves which don't exactly help our winter air quality.
I'd guess I was in pro mode which would account for the darker image withe ND filter but I may have adjusted that because a 2 stop difference. Whatever
