Will using another app other than DJI Go get me around possible false geo fence issues?

No - some of the GEO databases are on the aircraft - no matter what control app (e.g. Litchi) you are using, you can't override that restriction.
You must always unlock your restrictions with the built-in GO4 methods.

There are however, depending on your aircraft type, some other possibilities ... search for NLD (nolimitdronez)
