Grayed Icons on This Forum

What do the grayed out icons mean? (see below)
I ask because I've noticed recently various icons like these periodically turning gray and then eventually regaining their original color. My (perhaps faulty) recollection was that only restricted parts of this forum were grayed.

I'm not exactly sure but I think it means forums that have had no responses in some time. @clackey can shed more on this.

 

[Max Headroom]

Most forums have something similar to this and it means there have been no new threads posted or posts in existing threads since your last visit or since you marked that forum read.

If you click on the forum name (for example Mini 3) when it hasn't been greyed out and you see all the threads in that forum, if you click on the button "Mark as Read" which means you've read all the threads in that forum, when you go back (refresh) you'll find the forum name is greyed out which tells me when you see it hasn't been greyed then you have unread threads in that forum.
