1st post...Mavic on order. Where on site can I find FCC rules for flying this drone. Do you really need to call the airport before flying?

Howdy from Wyoming Edwardo..., welcome to the community, plenty of fine folk and excellent information here.

Hello Edward from Green Bay,
I too have my first RC flying machine, Mavic, on order. Should be here Friday.
I live right next to a small-ish airport that has no tower. So I doubt that I can fly around the neighborhood, even though it's pretty rural. It's only a few hundred feet from me. This will be a little frustrating, especially because I'm a pilot and can fly a plane over the neighborhood which makes it expensive and difficult to get photos or video close up due to the speed.
Another frustrating thing for me is that the Mavic has a 16,000' service ceiling... It's almost like having a Ferrari and not being able to drive it over 25mph... LOL The upside for me is, being in the Sierra Foothills, I'll have elevations of 3,000-9,000 ft as my starting point. Anyway....
Here's a link to the FAA about unmanned aircraft. The rules seem to be simple enough.

Sorry, but I need to point something out to you here: at the rated maximum ascent speed of 16.4 f/s, climbing to 15,000 feet will take you 15.24 minutes. Descent speed is much slower, max 9.8 f/s, so coming down will take you 25.5 minutes. So where is this 40 minute battery you think you have? Granted, your ascent will be much quicker than that when your battery dies about halfway back down.

Hello,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Mavic Pilots forum.
I hope that you will be able to use the forum to further your safety knowledge and for the exchange of innovative ideas and as a resource for current developments in Mavic quadcopters.
Use the FAA site for rules - Getting Started
You will have to register it (new rule as of 12/17)
Enjoy! Thumbswayup

You can see it better and much longer battery life. My 6+ would just about be drained in 2 batteries. My wife just bought me an iPad Pro 10.5". I like the extra real estate. :D
