Hello mavic pilots, anyone out there knows about drone policies in Myanmar?? Have looked around and didn't find much except out of date stuff and a website with a gov link that didn't work...

Im not sure about Myanmar, but I just got back from a few weeks in Thailand, and I had no problem whatsoever bringing my Mav or flying it there. Their rules are similar to FAA in the USA. I took special care not to buzz any temples, they dont like people doing that especially if there are monks inside.

Thanks for the reply...new about Thailand but still wondering about Myanmar...we shall see once there...

I was in Myanmar last november and saw drones flying. Unfortunately I didn't have my Mavic yet. But I don't know the rules.

Get a proper answer before doing it.
Myanmar has just half emerged out of being in control of a paranoid military dictatorship for the last few decades. It would not surprise me that they have strict laws on the books. They might have been removed now that Aung San Suu has taken power, but who knows!

Have you had problems flying your drone at Myanmar? I shall go there end of the month...

Watch the news! The current regime is attracting some criticism over alleged "ethnic cleansing". I wouldn't even visit if I were you.

It looks like there's some confusion about the rules
BAD NEWS:
"I filmed a Kiteboarding Competition in Myanmar in October last year and needed a special permissions letter from the government to bring in the drone.
There were many drones sitting in customs at the airport waiting to be picked up on the way out. They are very strict and will not allow you to bring it in unless you are doing filming for the government."
GOOD NEWS:
"I’ve been in Myanmar last week, and everything was OK.
The travel agency in Myanmar recommend me to take the drone, so I took it and didn’t had any problems.
On custom check, no issue, not even a question about the backpack content.
Had some 5-6 internal flight with scanner control of the backpack and no problem.
Just with the batteries, they put me to take it on hand luggage not on check in luggage, same issue in Thailand.
Over Swedagon pagoda in Yangon there was some issue with lost signal, they had some “no flight zone” over the pagoda. The distance was 400-500 meters and lost communication. Use it from distance."

I'd check these threads and maybe some more, just google for "myanmar drone rules"

I’m planning on travelling through Myanmar but not flying my M2P. I’m concerned it’ll be confiscated on arrival at Mandalay and withheld until exiting. Trouble is I’m travelling down the country and exiting through Yangon.

Where did you obtain a special permission letter?

Hello from Yangon, 27 Nov 2018.

I obtained a special permission letter back in 2015. Unfortunately, it rained for 4 days straight with no change in the forecast, so I bailed early and returned to Vietnam.

To get the permission to bring my drone (Phantom 2 Vision Plus) I needed to get approvals from 4 different ministries in order to clear Customs. These were the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Information, Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Culture.

Additionally, I had to pay the expenses of a government escort who would accompany me to my destinations where I wanted to fly. This included food and lodging. I had to provide an itinerary of where and when I wanted to fly and wasn't allowed to deviate from my schedule.

I was met by a representative from the Ministry of Tourism who informed me my paperwork was incomplete, through no fault of my own. They would fix the situation, but until then, Customs would hold my drone. In the Customs office, my drone backpack was inventoried and photographed. I saw stack of confiscated drones in the corner and was told there was a warehouse full of confiscated drones nearby.

My paperwork was fixed and I got my Phantom delivered to my hotel within 24 hours. Unfortunately, the weather never cooperated and I flew a total of 15 minutes outside the city of Bago, and then turned back for Yangon.

I'm in Yangon now after visiting Bagan again, but left my Mavic with a friend. I got it through customs without any paperwork, but decided to leave it with a friend in Yangon after considering the numerous security checks for domestic flights (security scans and xrays at each departure and arrival.)

If you're going to fly in Myanmar without the permits, consider the consequences. A foreign passport might not be the "get out of jail free" card one hopes it to be. Two foreign journalists were jailed for 2 months for flying over Naypitaw.

The inside of a Burmese prison is not on my bucket list.
