Did a little ship spotting in the SF Bay over the weekend. Shown is the Hamburg Sud approaching a berth in the Port of Oakland. There are a couple of waterfront parks on the East side of SF Bay which are drone-legal. Also got some good shots of the Bay Bridge and SF Financial District. Another ship spotter told me of a website called www.cruisin.me, which provides info on world shipping, including details on all ships that are in ports world-wide.

Ships are amongst the most interesting photographic subjects and the drone is the best way to photograph them.
The most useful app/website for shipping info is www.marinetraffic.com
It shows the name and details of all the vessels in your area.
With it you can see what's just around the corner before it comes into sight, how fast it's moving and what wind speed it's recording.
Also loads of photos uploaded by shipspotters worldwide.
Here's what it's showing right now for your area:

Incidentally Hamburg Sud is the name of the shipping line and the vessel's name is Cap Jervis.
Marinetraffic shows it currently tied up in Seattle:

Be careful around Halifax Harbour John as there are military vessels there - there maybe no fly zones - I know when we come close in boats they get nervous and we are law enforcement even

Here are a few pictures of a recent trip to St. John’s, nfld

Marinetraffic has an app to work on your phone as well as having a website.
They have the best network of receiver stations to show the most ships.

Hey Hauptmann, nice shot! Would be great to see some of your other captures.

I recently started heading up near the port of oakland for the same reason and used Free AIS Ship Tracking of Marine Traffic - VesselFinder to see what was there before heading up. Nearby, the USS Hornet sits inside class c airspace (actually about half of it), but it's clear to fly just outside of it.

I've also been up to Mare Island and over to Treasure Island (former Naval installations) - lots of interesting places without the worry of flying near or over people.

Agreed.

Marine traffic is the best

I applied to them to be a receiver base station and they sent me everything.
A receiver, an antenna and cable.

In return they give you a premium account.
I check my AIS every morning to see whats coming in to film
I can even set zones and get alerts when vessels i flag come close. Gives me time go get ready
