Hey Guys, new here just joined. I have a mavic pro that i havent used in awhile, what do i need to do to make this useable again. I know i need new batteries, possibly software updates and help. Thanks for any input, unit is like new, I hate to throw it in the trash.

It will have logged itself out of your DJI account, so it will be restricted in range and altitude until you log back in, which you can do wherever there is WIFI, or via a mobile hotspot if out in the field...

As for updates they are somewhat optional - it will probably fly fine without them, but you may get some extra / better functionality if you do update firmware. Be aware you may also get some additional restrictions so think carefully about whether this is worth doing !

DJI batteries do tend to look after themselves to some extent when not used - they should self-discharge to 60% and then remain relatively stable there. You can check their status and voltage stability via the RC, but they might be OK.

Check props for any cracks or other damage, and replace any that are not pristine.

Clean all the sensors and the camera lens with a soft microfibre cloth.

Fire it all up at home first to check it all connects OK, then move to field tests, which will usually involve hovering quite close to you and monitoring behaviour whilst flying LOS and checking stability and reliability and that all the controls work and are calibrated OK.

And that should be all you need to do, other than the law-compliance stuff.

Which model of the Mavic Pro do you have? Obtaining OEM batteries for the original Mavic Pro and Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom can be challenging.

If you are worried about RID, AFAIK, the original Mavic Pro would require an external RID model.

Once you update the mobile app, that should handle the software updates.

As said above, think before you update! Mine flies fine without the restrictions that were imposed by later updates to the drone and remotes firmware and the original Assistant 2.

Read through the release notes. They document progressive improvements and the introduction of new features. Choose the last firmware version that offers definite upgrades or new settings/features and upgrade to that version.

If all subsequent versions read "...bug fixes..." or "...security features/upgrades...": they won't do anything to improve the functionality.

While other updates surreptitiously turned on mandatory GEO and irreversibly turned on RID, even when not required by the FAA on drones under 250g. Trojan horses are often included..

Make sure to use the exact same "device" used previously, and hope you haven’t updated the OS on it, or the updated the app on it. Updating either of those will have likely created incompatibility with the current drone FW and force updating all of them to get them to work together.

Assuming nothing was damaged since your last flight, everything should work just fine as-is.

If you run into any issues though, try searching this forum first since there are lots of helpful Mavic Pro threads here. If you can't find an answer, go ahead and start a new thread describing the specific problem you're facing. The more details you can share, the better.

All of the Mavic Pro models weigh more than 250g. If this is first gen Mavic Pro, then it's a moot point because it didn't have the hardware to support RID without an external module.

My O.G. Mavics still fly perfectly! You can find batteries on Ebay for them....If you have the old Batteries KEEP THEM!! there are folks out there that can build you new ones!
Make sure to update it and get yourself an R.I.D. module to strap to it and you should be good to fly!
DO NOT throw that in the trash!!!! Those parts will soon be worth their weight in gold.

i also fly an M1P. i had two of them but gave one to my son in the USCG. I use aftermarket software from No Limit Drones (or it might be Dronz). It eliminates NFZ's and altitude restrictions. You still need to fly safely but in my case, my house is about 5-6 miles away from a commercial airport (Houston Hobby). Depending on the wind direction it can put my home in the flight path. If i just want to fly around my yard i would be unable to take off. It is worth the $40.00

I wasn't suggesting that an update would activate RID on his ancient drone. Just that activating RID without putting it in the release notes has happened, as was surreptitiously mandating GEO by removing the toggle tobturn it off, as it was "just informstional" and not mandatory! LOL! At least GEO can now be removed by separately updating the Flysafe database independently of the FW and app.
