Is it okay to hold the mavic while turning it on if you are in an area with poor terrain (i.e. tall grass). I have done this before and haven't noticed an issue, but I am wondering if it messes with the initial gimbal warmup on startup.

I haven't read anyone posting here saying it does and lots do it so I say from that no it doesn't . I would just hold it level as I could if I was to do it .

if you keep it steady while it is initialising the IMU and compass you should be ok. On a rocking boat I never had issues so why would a steady hand be a problem. But always do a short test hover after launch to check the behaviour. I think GO will show a warning if the drone is moved too much during initialisation. The problem is if you are alone, you only have one hand left so it's a bit clumsy to go through your checklist in GO, if you do that at all.
