How to turn down the beeb volume?

Understood, but while I won't claim to be an expert, I do know that everytime I've wished to quiet the thing, I've succeeded by covering the phone speaker. I therefore haven't even been aware that any sound was coming from the controller. Certainly, I have muted those irritating and persistent beepings in this way, so I'm not sure what the discussion is about now.

You could have just muted the phone itself to take care of those particular sounds.

No. I don't want everything muted. Just those irritating, incessant alarms. Thumb is quick and easy.
